How the word finder works

A transparent explanation of the data, matching rules, definitions, limits and scoring.

The short answer

The solver counts each letter you enter and accepts a word only if its letters fit within those counts; exact-anagram pages also require the full length. Up to three ? blanks cover missing letters and score zero. Results are grouped by length, longest first, then by Scrabble score, then alphabetically.

  • The everyday list has about 38,000 words; the optional full list about 178,000.
  • The lists are not an official TWL, NWL, Collins or SOWPODS edition.
  • Definitions are trimmed from Webster's Unabridged Dictionary (1913), which is public domain.
  • Scores are face value only, without board bonuses or the 50-point bingo.

Example With one A in your letters, a word needing two A's is rejected, unless a ? blank covers the second.

This page explains what happens between entering letters and seeing a result. It is written so users can judge the tool's limits instead of treating every answer as an official ruling.

Letter matching

The browser converts the entry to lowercase, removes unsupported characters and counts each letter. A candidate word is accepted only when its letter count fits inside the available count. If the entry contains one A, a result needing two As is rejected. In exact-anagram mode, the candidate must also use the full length of the entry.

Blank tiles

A question mark represents one unknown letter. When a candidate needs a letter that is not present in the rack, the matcher can spend one blank to cover it. Up to three blanks are accepted. Because a blank tile has no printed points, the score does not award the substituted letter's value.

Everyday and full dictionaries

The default list contains about 38,000 recognisable English words. It is intended for readable everyday results, puzzles and learning activities. The optional full list contains roughly 178,000 entries and includes many obscure forms used in word-game lists. A larger list is not automatically better: it can bury familiar answers under specialist or archaic words.

The lists are not presented as an official TWL, NWL, Collins or SOWPODS edition. Tournament and app dictionaries change, and different regions accept different words. Use the official source named in your rules when eligibility matters.

Result order

Results are grouped by word length, longest first. Within each length, higher Scrabble scores come first, then words are listed alphabetically. Filters for starting letters, ending letters and contained sequences run after letter matching, so they narrow the valid set rather than changing the dictionary.

Definitions

Short meanings are drawn from the public-domain 1913 edition of Webster's Unabridged Dictionary and trimmed for quick display. Old source material means some wording can sound dated, and newer meanings may be absent. The definition is a convenience for recognising a result, not a replacement for a current learner or specialist dictionary.

Letter scores

Scrabble and Words With Friends assign different face values to several letters. The tool totals the appropriate value for each letter in the candidate word. It does not know the board, so it cannot include double-letter, triple-letter, double-word or triple-word squares. It also cannot calculate crossing words created by a placement.

What the tool cannot verify

  • whether a word is accepted by your specific game edition;
  • whether it fits legally on the current board;
  • whether using assistance is allowed in the match;
  • which meaning or pronunciation applies in context;
  • whether an uncommon inflected form is natural modern usage.

Quality checks and corrections

Representative racks are tested for repeated letters, exact anagrams, blanks, score sorting and mobile display. Content pages identify approximate list sizes and important limitations. If a result, definition or score appears wrong, send the letters entered, the unexpected word and the page used through the contact page. That detail makes the report reproducible.

For casual puzzles, begin with the everyday list. Switch to the full list only when you need broad word-game coverage or cannot find a known answer.
